Consumer Psychology for a Digital Age

The Uberfication of Everything: Directory of Uber-inspired Businesses

Uber, the on-demand ‘driver for hire’ mobile service (ODMS) has become the poster-child for digital disruption and ‘convenience tech’.

Uber, bank rolled by Google, is disrupting (destroying) traditional taxi services by delivering more ‘value’ (mostly convenience value) to ‘value-maximising’ consumers through a smart mix of ‘regulatory hacking’ and technology.

And so digital innovators are seeking to ‘uberfy’ the world with convenient on-demand mobile services that digitally and conveniently match demand with supply.  Tap your phone, get service. It’s that simple.

Some will flourish, most will fail – (based we think, on the degree that current alternatives are actually inconvenient and offer poor value).

So here’s an evolving master-list of Uber-style services that match on-demand requests with real-time supply… (please message me, or add more in comments – and I’ll update the list)

Hi Priti, thanks – great post, and interesting perspective – and debate. Is this trend about ‘humanification’ or ‘rationalisation’?

Personally, I think Uber-style services can ‘dehumanify’ as much as humanify – you become a interchangeable commodity. I no longer have my driver, I have a cookie cutter driver that changes every ride.

But what is driving this? – in my view it’s economics. Regulatory hacks and convenient mobile tech are rationalising inefficient and inconvenient markets allowing people to ‘value maximise’.

Nice post Dr Paul! The world certainly is going the way of tech startups to take care of our lives. One company that I think you left off your list though is https://www.taskeasy.com/lawnmowing. I believe they’d go under lawn mowing and/or home maintenance (full disclosure I work for this company).

    Cheers,

I love Uber and how things have been adopted to their model. I just wish I lived closer to the city to take advantage of more of these services. Individual can take advantage of this by starting a business with their vehicle with no upfront costs to them.
